About this event
Most of Italy makes great wine, but two regions stand out for the very best: Tuscany in central Italy which we tasted last year and Piemonte in the north-east of Italy (litererally at the foot of the mountains) just south of Turin. Many of the Piemonte appellations have DOCG status - the highest level of quality wine designation in Italy.
Piemonte is the home of the most exquisite red wines made from the Nebbiolo grape - especially in the famous appellations of Barbaresco and Barolo. They produce wines with incredible length and complexity - often with a note of 'tar and roses' yet light in tannins. Within Barolo there are numerous individually classified vineyards whose top wines will age for decades and can sell for many hundreds of pounds a bottle. Piemonte also produces lovely fresh reds from the Barbera grape and soft silky reds from the Dolcetto grape as used in the famous Dogliani appellation.
But Piemonte is also known for some delicious whites, especially from the Cortese grape, used to make the famous white wine Gavi di Gavi amongst others and the Muscat grape, making the beautifully light Moscato d'Asti.
This will be a very special tasting: we will taste 8 wines (probably two whites and six reds) including at least three Barolos from prestigious producers including one from top vineyards at the famous GD Vajra estate - one of the very top names in the region (equivalent in status to a 'first growth' in France).
The evening will end with a light supper of bread and specially selected Italian cheeses - and there will be chance to retaste the wines with the food.
There is no fixed charge for this event , but the event is arranged in support of the Scottish Refugee Council and because of the very special wines being presented we suggest a donation of around £35 /person if that is possible (but you are free to give more or less according to your circumstances). If space is available, you can book up to 5 places if you wish to bring friends (but don't delay as there are only 9 places overall for each event). You can also choose to add one donation for all the places your are booking (no need to make a separate payment for each) - and you can even Gift Aid your donation if you are a taxpayer. If you are booking multiple events, you can now check out several bookings together, but please add a donation for each event.
